About Albany County Office of the Public Defender

The Albany County Office of the Public Defender is a county government office that represents people who cannot afford private counsel in criminal and family court matters in Albany County. The Public Defender is appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Legislature, and the office's staff reportedly includes about 60 attorneys, mitigation specialists, investigators and administrative professionals. Representation can begin at the first contact with police or child protective services, and attorneys are available around the clock at arraignment.

Attorneys are assigned to Albany City Court, Albany County Court, roughly fifteen other local courts, parole hearings and Family Court, handling matters that range from misdemeanors to serious felonies and family matters such as custody and abuse and neglect. Dedicated attorneys file appeals in County Court, the Appellate Division and the Court of Appeals. The office also works with the state Office of Indigent Legal Services and participates in alternatives-to-incarceration programs. Its main office is at 112 State Street in Albany, New York.
