About American Arbitration Association

The American Arbitration Association (AAA) is a not-for-profit organization that administers arbitration, mediation and other alternative dispute resolution processes for people and organizations that want to settle disputes outside of court. It was formed in 1926 and is headquartered in New York City. Its international division, the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), handles cross-border matters and provides conflict-management services in more than 80 countries.

The AAA's administrative role runs from the filing of a case through its closing, including appointing mediators and arbitrators, setting hearings and offering online dispute resolution. It also designs dispute resolution systems for corporations, unions, government agencies, law firms and courts, and provides education and training on the subject. Industry-specific programs cover sectors such as construction, employment, healthcare, insurance, intellectual property and entertainment. In New York State, the AAA administers three insurance arbitration programs covering no-fault benefit disputes, SUM/UM claims and HIMP reimbursement disputes, and it operates a New York Insurance Case Management Center in New York City.
