About American Civil Liberties Union
Since 1920 the American Civil Liberties Union has operated as a nonprofit organization devoted to civil rights. It describes its approach as defending constitutional freedoms in courts, legislatures and communities. Britannica groups the organization's work into three areas: freedom of expression, conscience and association; due process of law; and equality under the law. Affiliates operate in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
The national organization is headquartered at 125 Broad Street in Lower Manhattan, and its board includes representatives from each state affiliate. Issue areas listed on its website include immigrants' rights, transgender rights, reproductive freedom and voting rights. According to its contact page, legal assistance is handled by local affiliates rather than the national office. The New York State affiliate, the New York Civil Liberties Union, is a separate nonprofit founded in 1951 that has eight offices across the state.
