About Appellate Advocates
Appellate Advocates is a nonprofit public defender organization formed in 1995 by experienced criminal defense attorneys. It represents people convicted of crimes who cannot afford a private lawyer, and courts generally assign the organization as their counsel. Most of its cases are direct appeals that follow a trial or a guilty plea, and its stated mission is to provide appellate representation to indigent people convicted of crimes.
Beyond appeals, the organization runs a Social Work Program that provides client counseling and evaluations for ongoing legal proceedings, and a Re-entry Services Program that helps clients obtain housing, benefits and employment during and after incarceration. Its other listed practices include non-citizen representation, innocence investigations, trafficking-related post-conviction work, Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act matters, and Sex Offender Registration Act petitions. Its office is at 111 John Street in lower Manhattan, and it serves people convicted in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
