About Appellate Division, First Judicial Department
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, First Judicial Department, is a New York State court and one of four intermediate appellate courts in the state. Matters from New York and Bronx counties come before it. It hears civil and criminal appeals from the Supreme Court, Surrogate's Court, Family Court and Court of Claims, and it also admits new attorneys to the bar and disciplines practicing lawyers in those counties.
The court's own materials describe a caseload that includes family matters, personal injury claims, commercial disputes, trusts and estates, criminal cases and landlord-tenant cases, and report that more than three million cases are heard each year. Because appeals to the Court of Appeals are generally by permission, the Appellate Division functions as the court of last resort in most cases. Its courthouse is at 27 Madison Avenue in Manhattan, and its listed telephone number is (212) 340-0400.
