About Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, Supreme Court of the State of New York
The Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, is a component of the Supreme Court of the State of New York and functions as one of four regional intermediate appellate courts in the state. Its jurisdiction covers appeals from trial courts in ten counties: Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Putnam. The court hears both civil and criminal matters, and appeals from its rulings go to the New York Court of Appeals.
The court's work centers on deciding appeals and motions, and its clerk's office answers questions about decided appeals, court rules and appellate practice. Separate units handle attorney matters such as certificates of good standing, name changes, disciplinary proceedings and the registration of in-house counsel. The court sits at 45 Monroe Place in the Brooklyn Heights area of downtown Brooklyn, and it has used the Monroe Place courthouse since it opened in 1938.
