About Appellate Division - Second Judicial Department
The Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, is the intermediate appellate court of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, one of four geographic departments of the Appellate Division. It hears appeals from the trial courts and has jurisdiction over certain original proceedings, reviewing questions of law, fact and discretion in civil and criminal matters. Appeals from its decisions go to the Court of Appeals, the state's highest court.
The court's jurisdiction covers ten downstate counties: Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Putnam. Its Clerk's Office handles appellate filings, calendaring, motions, and attorney matters such as certificates of good standing and disciplinary proceedings. The courthouse is at 45 Monroe Place in the Brooklyn Heights section of Brooklyn, and the Appellate Term for the Second Department also sits in Brooklyn.
