About Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI)
Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) is a performing rights organization that describes itself as a bridge between music creators and the businesses that play their music publicly. Founded in 1939, it represents more than 1.5 million songwriters, composers and music publishers, along with over 25 million musical works. Businesses that hold a BMI license receive permission to perform works from its repertoire, and the license fees are passed back to its affiliated writers and publishers.
BMI's activities include issuing licenses to businesses, collecting fees, distributing royalties, protecting copyrights, and running programs for songwriters such as workshops, mentorship and performance opportunities. Its International department coordinates with sister societies in nearly 200 countries through reciprocal and unilateral agreements. The official site lists offices in Austin, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., London, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and New York, and the International department's mailing address is 7 World Trade Center in New York City.
