About Brooklyn Defender Services

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is a non-profit public defense office and law firm. It represents people facing loss of liberty, family separation and other serious legal harms, and its stated mission is to provide that representation and advocacy free of cost. Its work is client-centered and takes place both in and out of court. BDS also operates as a community-based non-profit, offering clinics, educational programs and legal information. Its staff includes attorneys, social workers, paralegals, investigators and administrative professionals.

The organization is organized into practice areas: criminal defense; family defense, which aims to keep children with their families and out of the foster system; immigration, which covers defense against deportation and immigration benefit applications; civil justice, which addresses housing, public benefits, education and employment; and policy, advocacy and reform, including civil rights and law reform litigation. Its main office is at 177 Livingston Street in Brooklyn, and it also has a community office in East New York, Brooklyn. Its attorneys appear in New York City courts and administrative forums in Brooklyn and Queens.
