About Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority
The Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority (BMHA) is a public housing authority that the Buffalo Common Council established in 1934, and the New York State Legislature later confirmed its creation. It operates as a public corporation with independent status. Its stated mission is to foster strong, resilient and inclusive communities by providing safe housing options for individuals, families and seniors. The agency runs public housing programs in the City of Buffalo and administers a Housing Choice Voucher program that helps households lease privately owned apartments and houses within the city.
The authority operates family and senior developments, reports housing more than 10,000 residents at 29 developments and scattered sites, and oversees affiliated housing through its Bridges Development affiliate. It has been pursuing multi-year redevelopment projects at Commodore Perry Homes, Marine Drive Apartments and Shaffer Village. Its seven-member Board of Commissioners includes five members appointed by the mayor and two resident commissioners elected by BMHA residents. Its Buffalo offices include a Perry Street headquarters and a Housing Assistance Office on Elmwood Avenue.
