About Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN-N.Y.)

The Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN-N.Y.) is a non-profit immigration and human rights organization serving the refugee community on Long Island and throughout southern New York State. Since its founding in 1983, it has worked on immigrant civil rights and public understanding of immigration. Its bilingual attorneys and paralegals provide free and low-cost legal representation, and the organization also runs community education and advocacy work. Its immigration legal services include representation and application help for temporary protective status, asylum, DACA, special immigrant juvenile status, family petitions, and U-Visas.

CARECEN's legal programs include an Office of New Americans legal counsel team, a Rapid Response Program for individuals who have recently arrived in the United States and are in removal proceedings, a Low-Bono Program, and a Youth Immigration Project serving children who reside in Long Island and entered the U.S. without a parent or guardian. With offices in Hempstead and Brentwood, its services are oriented to Nassau County and Suffolk County. In 2024, its legal services programs served more than 1,773 clients, according to the organization's reported figures.
