About City Bar Justice Center

The City Bar Justice Center is a nonprofit division of the City Bar Fund, the charitable affiliate of the New York City Bar Association. It provides free civil legal services to New Yorkers who cannot afford a lawyer, relying largely on volunteer attorneys from law firms, corporate legal departments and other institutions, and it also educates the public and works on public policy. Its civil justice projects cover consumer bankruptcy, elder law, immigrant justice, federal pro se assistance, veterans disability claims, and planning and estates, while a free Legal Hotline gives information, advice and referrals to low-income callers on matters such as matrimonial and family law, housing and debt collection.

The organization traces its roots to community outreach programs run by the City Bar in the 1980s, which were later joined by a free legal hotline and centralized into the Justice Center after the 9/11 response. The City Bar Fund changed its name to the City Bar Justice Center in 2005. Its office is at 42 West 44th Street in Manhattan, and its services are directed at residents of New York City's five boroughs.
