About Commodity Futures Trading Commission

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is an independent agency of the United States federal government, established in 1974. It regulates the country's derivatives markets, which include futures, swaps and certain kinds of options, with a stated mission of promoting the integrity, resilience and vibrancy of those markets through sound regulation. Its oversight covers exchanges, swap execution facilities, clearing organizations, swap dealers, futures commission merchants and other intermediaries. The Commission is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 brought over-the-counter swaps under its oversight.

Through its Division of Enforcement, the agency investigates violations of the Commodity Exchange Act and CFTC regulations, and it works with other federal and state agencies on criminal and other actions involving commodities fraud. Registration and examination of certain firms and individuals is conducted for it by the National Futures Association. The agency's regional offices are located in Chicago, New York and Kansas City, Missouri. Its New York regional office, the Eastern Region, is listed on the official contact page at 290 Broadway, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10007.
