About County Attorney

The Suffolk County Department of Law, which the county's own website presents as the County Attorney's office, is the civil law office for Suffolk County government. It advises elected county officials, county departments, agencies and commissions on governmental matters, and it prosecutes and defends civil actions brought by or against the County, the County Legislature and certain officers whose compensation comes from county funds. It does not give personal legal advice to members of the public. The county directs residents who need a lawyer to the New York State Unified Court System's attorney directory or to the Suffolk County Bar Association's referral service.

The office is organized into bureaus for administration, litigation, municipal law, and social services and family court matters. Its listed address is the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge, New York, which serves as the county government's central building.
