About Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice
The Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice is a nonprofit program of the New York City Bar Association, founded in 2003 and named for Cyrus R. Vance, a former U.S. Secretary of State. Its stated mission is to advance global justice by engaging lawyers across borders to support civil society and an ethically active legal profession. The center arranges pro bono legal representation for NGOs and international governmental bodies in four program areas: the environment, human rights and access to justice, institutional integrity, and public interest reporting. It also runs initiatives that build pro bono capacity among law firms, bar associations and law schools.
The Environment Program promotes environmental and human rights by representing civil society groups, environmental defenders and UN bodies. The Human Rights and Access to Justice Program protects individuals from discrimination and violence and supports international human rights bodies. The Institutional Integrity and Public Interest Reporting programs address government transparency and provide legal support to independent media outlets. The center's office is at 42 West 44th Street in New York City.
