About Erie County Family Court
Erie County Family Court is a court in Buffalo that is part of the Eighth Judicial District and operates under the New York State Unified Court System. Its official page lists adoption, guardianship, foster care approval and review, juvenile delinquency, family violence, child abuse and neglect, and child support, custody, and visitation among its areas of work. Other reference sites add paternity, family offense petitions, and persons in need of supervision to that list.
The court does not grant divorces, since those cases are handled in the state Supreme Court. Parents, guardians, relatives, and social services agencies can file petitions, and a judge may appoint an Attorney for the Child in contested matters. Petitions are processed on the fourth floor of the courthouse at One Niagara Plaza, Buffalo, NY 14202. The official page lists weekday hours from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
