About Essex County Prosecutor's Office
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office (ECPO) is a county government office in Newark, New Jersey, responsible for detecting, investigating and prosecuting indictable crimes in Essex County. Governors appoint the county prosecutor, with Senate consent, to five-year terms. Around 400 personnel, including assistant prosecutors, detectives and support staff, work under the prosecutor. The office reports handling roughly a quarter of the criminal prosecutions in New Jersey.
Its units include legal divisions such as appellate, grand jury and juvenile justice, plus investigation units covering domestic violence and arson. Specialized units address financial crimes and fraud, and official corruption. A Victim-Witness Advocacy Office provides case status notification letters and guidance to crime victims and witnesses. Headquarters are on the third floor of the Veterans Courthouse at 50 West Market Street in Newark, and some units work from other Essex County sites, including the Wilentz Justice Complex in Newark. The sources describe no offices in New York State.
