About Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is a federal law enforcement and intelligence agency that operates within the U.S. Department of Justice. An order issued by Attorney General Charles Joseph Bonaparte in 1908 created the investigative agency, and Congress designated the present name in 1935. The Director is appointed by the president, confirmed by the Senate and serves a 10-year term. The agency has over 37,100 employees, including approximately 13,700 special agents.

The FBI enforces federal law and investigates criminal activity including terrorism, counterintelligence and espionage, cyber threats, public corruption, civil rights violations, transnational organized crime, complex financial crime, violent crime, environmental crime and weapons of mass destruction. It also locates federal fugitives and provides services such as criminal history checks, laboratory services and law enforcement training to partners and the public. In New York State, the New York Field Office, located at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan, covers the five boroughs of New York City, eight counties in New York State, and LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports, and it oversees resident agencies in other locations.
