About Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
Congress set up the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as an independent federal body to help keep the nation's financial system steady and trusted. Its duties include insuring deposits, examining and supervising financial institutions for safety and soundness and consumer protection, and resolving failed banks. For deposits, the standard coverage amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category. The agency receives no congressional appropriations and is instead funded by assessments that insured banks pay.
Although headquartered in Washington, D.C., the agency operates regional and field offices in other parts of the country. The New York Regional Office, at 350 Fifth Avenue, has an area of responsibility that includes New York State alongside several other jurisdictions. Its field offices in New York State are located in New York City and Syracuse. The agency directly supervises and examines over 2,700 banks and savings associations for safety and soundness.
