About Goddard Riverside Law Project

The Goddard Riverside Law Project is a program of Goddard Riverside Community Center, a New York City human services organization. Founded in 1981, it provides free legal services and tenant-organizing support to low-income residents on the west side of Manhattan, with a focus on preserving affordable housing and improving living conditions. Its staff includes attorneys and tenant organizers who work with individual tenants and tenant groups.

The project handles housing matters such as eviction defense, including representation in nonpayment, holdover and Housing Part proceedings in New York City Housing Court, and problems like harassment, rent overcharge, illegal lockouts and lack of heat and hot water. It also helps tenants obtain housing-related benefits, runs know-your-rights workshops, co-hosts monthly housing clinics, screens clients for consumer debt issues, and is a co-founder of the LEAP coalition of legal services providers. Its office is at 51 West 109th Street in New York, NY 10025. For fiscal year 2023–2024, its grant report states that it served more than 1,750 people in New York County.
