About Hiscock Legal Aid Society
Hiscock Legal Aid Society is a nonprofit legal services organization based in Syracuse that provides free legal help to lower-income residents of Onondaga County and nearby areas. It was founded in 1949, and its early funding came from a bequest connected to a former Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals. The organization is also supported in part by the IOLA Fund of New York State and describes itself as a United Way agency.
Its work is organized into several programs. The civil program handles divorce, domestic violence, landlord-tenant, foreclosure prevention and unemployment insurance benefit matters. Other programs cover representation in Onondaga County Family Court in assigned cases, appeals from criminal convictions and Family Court judgments, parole revocation defense, extradition defense, and immigration legal services in parts of Central New York, the Mohawk Valley and the North Country. A misdemeanor defense program in Syracuse City Court was announced under a contract in December 2025. Its office is at 351 South Warren Street in Syracuse.
