About Human Rights Watch
Human Rights Watch is an independent, international nonprofit that investigates and reports on human rights abuses around the world. It was founded in 1978 as Helsinki Watch and is staffed by country experts, lawyers, journalists and others. The organization refuses government funding and directs its advocacy at governments, armed groups and businesses, urging them to change or enforce laws, policies and practices.
Human Rights Watch conducts field research in roughly 100 countries and publishes its findings to press, policymakers and the public. Its work is organized by regional divisions and thematic programs, including children's rights, refugees, women's rights and disability rights. Its US program focuses on immigration and border rights, criminal justice, democracy, and racial justice and civil rights enforcement. Its main New York office is at 1441 Broadway in Manhattan, and the organization lists New York as its headquarters.
