About Internal Revenue Service
The Internal Revenue Service is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. It enforces the country's federal tax statutes and collects federal taxes, and it administers the Internal Revenue Code, the main body of federal statutory tax law. The agency operates under the authority the Treasury secretary holds under the Internal Revenue Code, and its main address is in Washington, D.C.
The agency's website offers online tools for making payments, checking refund status, retrieving tax records, finding forms, and applying for an Employer Identification Number. Third-party directories list IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers in New York State in cities such as New York, Brooklyn, Bronx, Buffalo, Albany and Rochester, where in-person help is generally scheduled by appointment. A New York City government page also says local IRS offices operate by appointment only. The IRS pages retrieved did not themselves list New York office addresses, so those locations come from non-IRS sources and should be checked against the official office locator.
