About International Refugee Assistance Project
The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) is a nonprofit that traces its origins to a 2008 student-formed effort, and it became an independent 501(c)(3) in December 2018. Its work integrates legal aid, strategic litigation, policy advocacy, media advocacy, and legal information to uphold and advance the rights of people seeking safety around the world. The organization's litigation team leverages the courts to challenge refugee rights violations, and its pro bono network draws on volunteer attorneys and law students.
IRAP reports offices in the United States, Jordan, Lebanon and Germany, and its U.S. offices are located in New York City and Washington, D.C. The organization has 28 student chapters spanning the United States and Canada. A companion legal information website, which states that it is not legal advice, is designed to help forcibly displaced people, migrants, asylum seekers and refugees understand relevant legal information, and all of IRAP's help is free.
