About Jefferson County District Attorney
The Jefferson County District Attorney is the county office that prosecutes violations of New York State law committed within Jefferson County. Voters in the county choose the District Attorney for four-year terms, and statutory authority for the post comes from the County Law, the Criminal Procedure Law and the Penal Law. Its prosecutions include violations of the Penal, Alcoholic Beverage Control, Agriculture and Markets, Social Services, Vehicle and Traffic, Parks and Recreation, Navigation, Tax and Environmental Conservation Laws.
Beyond trial-level work, the legal staff also prosecutes post-conviction motions and appeals filed by defendants in the appellate courts. Those matters involve appearances for appellate arguments in Jefferson County Court, the Appellate Division, Fourth Department in Rochester, New York and the Court of Appeals in Albany. Assistant District Attorneys are assigned to prosecute misdemeanor, violation and traffic offense cases heard in specific Town and Village Justice Courts and Watertown City Court. The office is located on the seventh floor at 175 Arsenal Street in Watertown.
