About Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term
The Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term is a division of the Supreme Court of New York State, the general trial court for the 2nd Judicial District, located in Brooklyn. It generally hears civil matters that fall outside the authority of the lower courts, with typical matters including disputes with larger monetary stakes and proceedings over divorce, separation or annulment. According to the court's website, it handles all non-criminal matters, including name changes, matrimonial matters, foreclosures, mental hygiene applications, elder law cases and other civil litigation.
Its administration is led by an Administrative Judge for Civil Matters for the 2nd Judicial District, with a Chief Clerk overseeing civil matters. Judges preside over individually numbered parts, each with published part rules. A Help Center on the premises assists litigants who have chosen not to be represented or have not retained counsel, and the court states it cannot recommend a particular attorney or firm. The courthouse at 360 Adams Street in Brooklyn is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Criminal Term of the same Supreme Court sits in a separate building at 320 Jay Street.
