About Legal Action Center
The Legal Action Center is a New York-based nonprofit that uses legal and policy strategies to fight discrimination, build health equity, and restore opportunities for people with arrest and conviction records, substance use disorders, and HIV or AIDS. Since its founding in 1973, it has combined direct legal services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, coalition-building, and education and training.
Its free legal services are available to New Yorkers facing discrimination in health care, employment, housing, and education tied to those circumstances. It also provides technical assistance and training to agencies that serve its clients. It founded and co-leads the Coalition of Reentry Advocates (CoRA), a New York State coalition of advocates. Its New York office is located at 39 Broadway in Manhattan, and it also lists a Washington, DC office.
