About Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York
The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York is a nonprofit law firm that provides free civil legal aid to low-income people in the region. It does not take criminal matters. Its work ranges from advice, brief service and referrals to community legal education and full representation. Beyond individual cases, it pursues impact advocacy, using litigation and other tools to address patterns that affect the wider community. Its Private Attorney Involvement program connects clients with volunteer private lawyers.
Practice focus areas include domestic violence protective orders, custody and divorce, eviction and foreclosure matters, and public benefits such as SNAP, Medicaid and Social Security. A Senior Legal Services unit serves residents aged 60 and over. The organization operates five staffed offices in Albany, Amsterdam, Canton, Plattsburgh and Saratoga Springs, covering 16 counties stretching from the Catskills north to the Canadian border, plus the St. Regis Mohawk reservation.
