About Long Island Power Authority (LIPA)
The Long Island Power Authority is a corporate municipal agency and political subdivision of New York State, created by the State Legislature under the Long Island Power Authority Act of 1986. It owns the electric transmission and distribution system serving Long Island and the Rockaways, and describes itself as a not-for-profit public utility. Day-to-day management, power delivery and customer service are handled under a management contract with PSEG Long Island, a subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group.
The authority oversees the electric grid, manages its finances and bond programs, and is governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees whose meetings are open to the public. It also responds to records requests under the New York Freedom of Information Law and publishes resource plans, tariffs and financial reports. Its New York presence centers on its Uniondale headquarters at 333 Earle Ovington Boulevard, and its service area includes Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaways in Queens.
