About Monroe County Conflict Defender's Office
The Monroe County Conflict Defender's Office is a county legal services unit in Rochester that represents people who cannot afford an attorney in criminal and family court cases. It operates within Monroe County's Department of Public Safety and was created in 2003 to take on matters where the county Public Defender's Office has a conflict of interest. Its assigned-counsel arrangement is a joint effort between the county and the Monroe County Bar Association.
Full-time staff attorneys, called Assistant Conflict Defenders, handle Rochester City Court misdemeanor cases, Monroe County Family Court matters, and appeals in courts where the Public Defender cannot act. Private panel attorneys accept felony and other assignments alongside the staff. The office says it serves thousands of clients each year. Its official address is 16 East Main Street, Suite 600, Rochester, NY 14614.
