About Monroe County Public Defender's Office

The Monroe County Public Defender's Office is a branch of Monroe County government, established to meet the constitutional duty of each New York county to provide indigent legal defense. Its public defenders, staff attorneys, social workers, investigators and administrative staff represent financially eligible clients in criminal and family courts, as well as in appellate matters. The office is led by a Public Defender appointed by the Monroe County Legislature.

The office is organized into bureaus. Its criminal court bureaus cover town, village, city, county and supreme courts throughout Monroe County. A Family Court Bureau handles custody, visitation, family offenses, abuse, neglect and paternity matters, and an Appeals Bureau handles appeals of criminal convictions and sentences and other post-conviction proceedings. The office also provides training to attorneys across New York State and offers internship opportunities. Its main address is 10 North Fitzhugh Street in Rochester, and the sources reviewed do not list offices elsewhere in New York State.
