About National Center for Access to Justice
The National Center for Access to Justice is described as an academically affiliated national nonprofit working for change that helps people obtain access to justice. Its Justice Index is an online, data-intensive ranking system that places the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico according to how far they have adopted selected best policies for access to justice. Its policy categories include attorney access, covering policies for increasing access to a lawyer, as well as self-help and other areas.
Beyond the index, the center is also working to develop best practices for civil legal aid programs in New York City to use data to track outcomes achieved by clients and communities. It also supports the movement for a civil right to counsel for individuals facing legal concerns that implicate fundamental human needs. The 2025 International Access to Justice Forum was held in New York City in September 2025, hosted by Fordham and NYU Law Schools, including the National Center for Access to Justice. Its listed address is 150 West 62nd Street, Suite 7-165, New York, NY 10023. The organization is described as based at Fordham Law School, while some older directory listings describe it as affiliated with Cardozo Law School.
