About National Labor Relations Board
The National Labor Relations Board is an independent federal agency, headquartered in Washington, D.C., that enforces the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. Its work covers private sector employers and unions: it supervises secret-ballot elections on union representation and addresses unfair labor practices. The agency has a five-member Board that acts largely as a quasi-judicial body deciding cases, and a General Counsel who investigates and prosecutes unfair labor practice charges.
Field work runs through regional offices that conduct elections and investigate charges. In New York State, the NLRB has Region 2 in Lower Manhattan, Region 29 in Brooklyn, and Region 3 in Buffalo, which also has a resident office in Albany. Region 2 serves Manhattan, the Bronx, and Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties; Region 29 serves Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island; and Region 3 covers most of New York State and Vermont. The agency's Division of Judges also operates offices in Washington, New York, and San Francisco.
