About New York City Bar Association
The New York City Bar Association, formally the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, is a voluntary association of lawyers and law students founded in 1870. Its declared aims include preparing and rallying a diverse legal community, advancing law reform, and defending the rule of law and access to justice. The association reports more than 20,000 members, and its committees issue reports, comment on public policy, and host events. It also offers continuing legal education and member services such as career workshops and a law library.
Its charitable affiliate, the City Bar Fund, supports the City Bar Justice Center, which coordinates pro bono civil legal services for low-income New Yorkers, and the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, which provides pro bono advice to international human rights and social justice organizations. The Legal Referral Service, sponsored jointly with the New York County Lawyers' Association, offers free initial telephone consultations and referrals to pre-screened lawyers. Pro bono work has extended to immigration, homelessness and criminal justice. The association has been based at 42 West 44th Street in Manhattan since 1896.
