About New York City Commission on Human Rights
The New York City Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is a city agency that enforces the NYC Human Rights Law, Title 8 of the city's Administrative Code. Its staff take in, investigate and prosecute complaints alleging violations of that law, and it also carries out public education and community relations work. The Commission applies restorative justice principles both when handling complaints and in its community partnerships.
The law covers discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations, listing protected traits such as race, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity. Interns, paid or unpaid, are treated as employees under it. Attorneys may file verified complaints on a client's behalf by mail, following the Commission's Rules of Practice. Its main office is at 22 Reade Street in Manhattan.
