About New York City Council
The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of New York City and has 51 members, each elected from one of the city's 51 council districts. The Council describes itself as the city's legislative body, separate from the Mayor's administration but an equal partner in running the city. Its listed responsibilities include introducing and voting on local laws, negotiating and approving the city budget with the Mayor, monitoring city agencies such as the Department of Education and the NYPD, and reviewing land use decisions. The Council can enact a law over a mayoral veto with a two-thirds or greater vote.
Most legislative work happens in standing committees, each chaired by a Council Member, which study proposed laws, hear from agency representatives and the public, and then recommend action to the full body. The Council also operates a public legislative website and data API for searching bills and hearings. Its legislative office is at 250 Broadway in Manhattan, and its Stated Meetings are held in the Council Chambers at City Hall, while Council Members maintain offices in their districts across the five boroughs.
