About New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection
The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) is a municipal government agency in New York City. Its origins go back to 1969, when the City Council passed a consumer protection law giving the agency broad authority over deceptive business practices. The department was renamed in 2019 from the Department of Consumer Affairs, and its stated aim is to protect and enhance the daily economic lives of New Yorkers.
DCWP licenses more than 45,000 businesses across dozens of industries and enforces consumer protection, licensing and workplace laws, including paid sick leave and fair workweek rules. Its offices of Financial Empowerment and Labor Policy & Standards handle community outreach, free tax preparation, financial counseling and workplace education. The agency also investigates complaints, pursues legal action and settlements against companies, and has recently pursued enforcement in the delivery, subscription and employment agency sectors. Its primary office is at 42 Broadway in Manhattan.
