About New York City Department of Education
The New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) is a New York City government department that manages the city's public school system. It administers the City School District of the City of New York, which covers all five boroughs and serves about 1.1 million students in more than 1,800 schools. The department is run by the Panel for Educational Policy together with the schools chancellor.
The department's Office of the General Counsel advises it on legal matters, including labor and employment, equal opportunity, employee discipline, special education, administrative and compliance questions, and commercial transactions. The office also handles subpoenas for records, which the DOE accepts by email, and Freedom of Information Law requests for department records. Its address is 52 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10007.
