About New York City Department of Investigation

The New York City Department of Investigation is a government agency that serves as the city's Inspector General, providing independent oversight of city government. Its jurisdiction extends to mayoral agencies, elected officials, employees, and businesses that contract with or receive benefits from the city. Staff investigate fraud, corruption, and misconduct, and the agency refers cases for criminal prosecution. It can also recommend procedural reforms to reduce corruption risks, and it holds subpoena power and authority to take sworn testimony.

Beyond criminal and civil casework, the department conducts background investigations of City workers in sensitive positions and checks on companies seeking city contracts. It oversees the Office of the Inspector General for the NYPD and, since 2025, a Protest Response Oversight unit that monitors police responses to certain protests. The department reports to the Mayor and City Council but operates independently of both. Its investigative staff includes inspectors general, investigators, attorneys, forensic auditors, and computer forensic specialists. Its headquarters address is 180 Maiden Lane in Manhattan.
