About New York City Department of Parks & Recreation
The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, also called NYC Parks, is a municipal government agency that maintains the city's park system and provides recreational opportunities to residents and visitors. Its stated mission focuses on building, maintaining and programming a park network with attention to equity, access, safety and nature. The department is a mayoral agency led by a commissioner, and it took its current name in 1976, after predecessor bodies dating back to 1870 and 1934.
The agency reports that it looks after more than 30,000 acres and over 5,000 separate sites, including beaches, playgrounds, community gardens, cemeteries and street trees. It operates athletic fields, pools, recreation centers, nature centers, golf courses and historic house museums, and it organizes free concerts, cultural festivals and programs for the public. Its services are delivered through public employees, volunteers and partnerships with nonprofit and community organizations. Its operations cover all five boroughs of New York City, and its headquarters is at the Arsenal in the city.
