About New York City Department of Transportation
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is a municipal agency of New York City government. It was created in 1977 by consolidating several existing city agencies. Its stated mission is to provide for the safe, equitable and sustainable movement of people and goods and to create public spaces. The agency plans, designs, builds, maintains and manages roads, sidewalks, bridges, traffic signals, crosswalks, bike lanes, streetlights and the Staten Island Ferry.
The agency issues street construction and other permits, regulates trucks and commercial vehicles, and operates municipal parking garages and lots in all five boroughs. It reports responsibility for roughly 800 bridges and tunnels and about 6,300 miles of streets. Its headquarters is at 55 Water Street in Manhattan, and each of the five boroughs has its own borough commissioner. Its traffic and parking regulations are compiled in title 34 of the New York City Rules.
