About New York City Family Court
The New York City Family Court is a trial court within the New York State Unified Court System that hears proceedings involving children and families in the city. Its jurisdiction includes adoption, guardianship, foster care approval and review, juvenile delinquency, persons in need of supervision, family offenses, child abuse and neglect, paternity and parentage, and child support, custody and visitation. Divorce is outside its jurisdiction; matrimonial matters are heard in the Supreme Court, Civil Term.
The court has locations in each of the five boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn (Kings County), Manhattan (New York County), Queens, and Staten Island (Richmond County). Its official website describes electronic filing through the NYSCEF system and submission of evidence in person, by mail, or electronically, depending on case type. The court is administered by an administrative judge and a chief clerk, and its website publishes forms, court procedures, and guidance for self-represented parties.
