About New York City Fire Department (Fire Department of the City of New York, FDNY)
The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the city's full-service fire department, covering all five boroughs. Its primary mission is fire protection, emergency medical care, fire prevention and other public safety services for residents and visitors. It is led by a Fire Commissioner appointed by the Mayor.

It operates 218 firehouses and 39 EMS stations across 302 square miles. Its headquarters is in Brooklyn, the Fire Academy is on Randall's Island in Manhattan, and the EMS Academy is at Fort Totten in Queens. Public programs include fire safety education and a juvenile fire-setters intervention program for children.
