About New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is a public development corporation that provides public housing in New York City and also administers a citywide Section 8 Leased Housing Program. It was created in the 1930s to offer decent, affordable housing to low- and moderate-income New Yorkers. Its portfolio spans all five boroughs and includes conventional public housing developments as well as properties converted under the PACT/RAD programs.
The agency's work covers rent payments, repair and maintenance requests handled through a customer contact center, the Section 8 voucher program, online self-service tools for residents and applicants, and resident programs in financial empowerment, business development, career advancement and education. Its capital work includes modernization and preservation initiatives, including the Public Housing Preservation Trust. Its developments are located in New York City, and its walk-in service centers are listed in the Bronx and Brooklyn. The authority reports roughly 177,000 apartments across 335 developments.
