About New York City Law Department
The New York City Law Department, also called the Office of the Corporation Counsel, is the New York City government department responsible for most of the city's legal affairs. It represents the City, the Mayor, other elected officials and city agencies in civil litigation, and it handles juvenile delinquency proceedings in Family Court and Administrative Code enforcement cases in Criminal Court. Its attorneys also review local and state legislation, agency rules, contracts, leases and municipal financing documents, and provide legal advice to City officials.
The department is organized into multiple legal divisions, including Appeals, Environmental Law, Labor and Employment Law, Tax and Bankruptcy, and Workers' Compensation. Special Federal Litigation handles federal civil rights lawsuits brought against police, District Attorneys or correction officers. The main office is at 100 Church Street in Manhattan, and the department also has offices in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens, plus an office in Kingston. The Corporation Counsel's office does not represent or advise individuals in private legal matters.
