About New York City Law Department (Office of the Corporation Counsel)

The New York City Law Department, also called the Office of the Corporation Counsel, is the New York City government department responsible for most of the city's legal affairs. It is headed by the Corporation Counsel, who is nominated by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The Department represents the City, the Mayor, the City Council, and City agencies in civil litigation, and its attorneys draft and review local and State legislation, real estate leases, procurement contracts, and municipal bond financing documents.

The Department is organized into legal divisions covering areas such as appeals, affirmative litigation, commercial and real estate litigation, environmental law, labor and employment law, and tax and bankruptcy, and its Family Court division handles juvenile delinquency prosecutions, while the Special Federal Litigation division handles constitutional claims. Its New York presence includes a main office at 100 Church Street in New York, NY, borough offices in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, and an auxiliary office in Kingston.
