About New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (NYC TLC)
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) is a New York City government agency, created in 1971, that licenses and regulates the city's medallion (yellow) taxis, for-hire vehicles such as community-based liveries, black cars and luxury limousines, commuter vans, and paratransit vehicles. Its Board has nine members, eight of them unsalaried, and a salaried Chair heads the agency and runs its day-to-day licensing, regulatory and enforcement work. The agency licenses drivers, vehicles and bases that dispatch trips, including app-based companies, sets taxi fare rules and oversees the sale of taxi medallions.
The Uniformed Services Bureau contains a Safety and Emissions unit that inspects TLC-licensed vehicles and an Enforcement unit of peace officers who work to deter illegal operation of unlicensed vehicles and enforce TLC rules. Its New York City locations include a Manhattan office at 33 Beaver Street, a Long Island City office and a Woodside inspection facility in Queens. The official website, nyc.gov/tlc, provides licensing, fare, lost-property and driver-education information.
