New York County Defender Services (NYCDS) is a nonprofit public defense office that has operated since 1997 and is funded by the City and State of New York. Its trial lawyers defend people accused of crimes in Manhattan's Criminal and Supreme Courts, at no cost to the accused. Staff also include social workers, highly skilled investigators, paralegals and support staff. The office reports 70 attorneys among its more than 100 staff.
