About New York County Family Court
The Family Court hears matters involving children and families including: adoption; guardianship; foster care approval and review; juvenile delinquency and persons in need of supervision; family violence; child abuse and neglect; paternity and parentage; child support; custody and parenting time (visitation). In the 1st Judicial District, the court is responsible for the trial courts in New York County. The courthouse is located at 60 Lafayette Street New York, NY 10013, in Manhattan.
In New York City, each of the five boroughs has its own Family Court building. Support magistrates preside over child support and paternity cases, while court attorney referees hear matters involving custody, visitation, guardianship, and family offenses. A critical distinction sets Family Court apart from other courts: there are no juries. The courthouse lists a Clerk's Office, Law Library, and Virtual Help Center among its resources, along with a Self-Represented Services / Help Center, and each Family Court building includes a Children's Center. Family Court does not handle divorce cases. Matrimonial matters are heard in Supreme Court - Civil Term.
