About New York County Surrogate's Court

New York County Surrogate's Court is a court that handles proceedings concerning deceased people, including contested wills and questions about administering or distributing an estate's assets and debts. Surrogate's courts are also authorized to handle adoptions. Its jurisdiction covers the estates of people who were domiciled in New York County (Manhattan) at the time of death, and estate matters for decedents domiciled in other counties are directed to the surrogate's court of that county.

The court's work includes probate of wills, administration of estates without a will, guardianship, and accountings for estate and trust matters. These are handled through separate departments for probate, administration and small estates, miscellaneous proceedings, accounting, and guardian and adoption filings. A Help Center in Room 302 assists self-represented people with estate proceedings, guardianship, and probate or administration, and the court accepts filings electronically through the NYSCEF system. The court is located at 31 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10007, in the Hall of Records building in Lower Manhattan.
